Giant and Liv release new light weight e-bikes
Giant and Liv have released updated eMTBs with lower weights - and no drop in power.
Over night, Giant released their new Trance X Advanced E+ Elite, its lightest full-suspension e-bike ever. Thanks to the new EnergyPak battery the bike drops 4kg from the previous generation, and Giant claim it is the lightest full-power eMTB out there. Giant employ the SyncDrive Pro motor with 85Nm of pedaling support, so you're not missing out on any grunt.
The Trance X Advanced E+ Elite uses Maestro suspension, with a 150/140mm front to rear split on a mixed wheel size platform. There's a flip chip on the rear linkage so you can tweak your frame geometry to get the handling you want for your trails.
Dropping weight
Power to weight is the aim of the game for any performance improvement when going up. As such, Giant said this was the primary factor behind the design and development of the Trance X Advanced E+ Elite. The flagship model Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 0 weighs 18.8kg , which is 4kg lighter than the previous generation.
BIkes like the Trek Fuel EXe and the Specialized Levo SL or Pivot Shuttle SL have reduced motor outputs, usually 35-60Nm, along with smaller batteries, and this helps achieve lowe weight, but also a more instinctive ride feel. The Trance X Advanced E+ Elite has new battery cell technology that was developed specifically for E-bike usage.
The EnergyPak 400 was co-developed with Panasonic and weighs just 2.3kg. It uses higher volume cells so a full-power motor with a battery that’s half the weight of before. The new 22700 cell type uses a total of 20 cells, the same as most lightweight E-bikes, but these larger cells have a higher discharge capacity. Their design allows them to stay cooler, which means less stress on the system and a longer total lifecycle.
The Trance X Advanced E+ Elite frame and components are engineered to minimise weight without compromising stiffness and strength. The Advanced-grade composite material frame and Contact SLR Trail integrated one-piece handlebar/stem unit are prime examples of making light and strong work together..
Cables are routed through the headset for a clean look on the new bike, with an additional frame port add accessories such as lights. There are two control centers on the Trance X Advanced E+ Elite. The first is the RideControl Go button, which is cleanly integrated into the frame’s top tube and allows riders to quickly and easily turn power on and off and switch between power modes. Colored LED lights indicate current battery level and support mode.
The new RideControl Ergo 3 is integrated with the handlebar grips. The grips that come on the Trance X Advanced E+ Elite are size-specific and tapered for ergonomic comfort. (The control units can also be used with any replacement grip.) Each remote has three buttons that can be set up for personal preference. And the remote can be mounted on either side of the handlebar, with the option to add a second Ergo 3 and have buttons on each side of the bar to control features such as walk-assist mode or lights. Adjustments can also be made using the RideControl App—which gives riders the ability to customise the motor performance for their individual needs.
