As much as we’d all love to have XTR bling on our bikes, Shimano have come to the party for the rider on a budget with a revamped Alivio groupset, while on the cheaper end of the scale, the whole set looks very robust and would be a welcome upgrade for anybody looking to replace a wornout drivetrain on quality recreational mountian bikes.
SHIMANO ALIVIO MTB –
• Lighter pedalling with efficient drivetrain across a range of wheel sizes.
• FC–M4050 40-30-22 to Match with cassette 12-36 (29”) 11-34 (27.5”) 11-32 (26”)
• New design front derailleur FD-M4000 to match crankset
• New Shadow rear derailleur RD-M4000 (12mm narrower than current M430 rear derailleur)
10 speed specific Cranksets for 29 and 27.5″ wheelsets
Aimed at the 29″er and 27.5″er market, these cranks in the XT, SLX, and new Deore M-610 group are geared at a big wheel friendly 40T-30T-22T combination. Shimano also developed new front derailleurs in the XT and SLX range to optimize shifting with these smaller sized rings. These new derailleurs are shaped to offer better clearance due to their low profile design.
NEW MTB DOUBLE CRANKSET FOR 29 AND 27.5 INCH (XT/SLX/DEORE )
• Suitable gear range for big wheel (36-22)
• Hollowtech II technology 2 FC-M780 / M670

Shimano MT-15 now available in 27.5″
Again if you’re on a budget, you can’t really look past the new ShimanoWH-MT-15-275s’.
These are strong, good-looking trail wheels that with TLC, will serve you well for years. Wide enough to hold 2.3″ tyres these come in just under 2KG for the set. Nipples made from brass rather than aluminium add weight – but greater reliability.
