Volcanic Epic erupts in Rotorua
The Volcanic Epic in New Zealand represents everything that is great about mountain bike stage racing - and it starts today!
New Zealand is well-known as a mountain bike hotspot, if you'll forgive the geothermal pun, and the trails of Rotorua are one of the most diverse networks for all-year riding. No wonder they are always so popular! The Volcanic Epic launched in 2023 as a 5-day stage race to tackle the trails of Rotorua, Taupō, and Tokoroa for an unforgettable adventure across 185 kilometres of epic trails. And the Prologue kicks off today – April 3.
"2024 marks another incredible year for the Shimano Volcanic Epic, with unprecedented interest from riders around the world," said Tim Farmer, Race Director. "We're thrilled to showcase not only the North Island's top-notch trails but also the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region, providing participants with an experience that goes beyond the trails."
Ride, relax, repeat is the event’s mantra. The daily plans see mornings reserved for competitive racing, so afternoons leave time for riders to unwind and explore each region's unique attractions. From rejuvenating hot springs to scenic viewpoints, there's no shortage of ways to recharge and soak in the beauty of the North Island.

The Volcanic Epic in 2024
This year, the Volcanic Epic has welcomed 350 riders from 11 different countries including Singapore, Switzerland, Germany, New Caledonia, the US and Canada. The event team has set a challenging course totaling 185 kilometres and 4,484 metres of climbing, it's no walk in the park.
Returning riders include Rotorua’s Olly and Sam Shaw, combining forces as a pairs team for 2025 after podium positions for both last year. Previous women’s open teams winner Mary-Ann Moller returns with fellow Wellingtonian Gavin McCarthy for a shot at Mixed Open Pairs . From Australia, Tali Lane-Welsh and Joel Green from COMMTEL – ARA OFFROAD RACING are ones to watch for the Open Men Pairs. No doubt Australian power couple Em Viotto and Karl Michelin-Beard will be giving the Mixed Pairs category a nudge!
Farmer predicts a growing trend in stage racing. “When you want to experience the best places and culture anchored in your passion for mountain biking, there’s nothing quite like stage racing to get people here”.
