As mountain biking becomes more technically focused and bikes are designed to perform to a higher level, it is critical that the setup of a bike is done correctly. While bike fits have been in the market for a number of years ensuring each rider is comfortable on his or her bike, suspension setup has been seen as a dark art, with riders understanding little more than the recommended pressure from the manufacturer and sighting the O-Ring on their fork or shock.

Mounted to Fork

New to the bike technology market, Dusty Dynamics based out of Western Australia has produced the Shock Wiz, an automated suspension tuning system set to revolutionise the mountain bike market. Screwing into the air valve of the fork or shock, and reading the pressure changes that occur inside the fork collect data collected for the rider to review after the ride.

Connecting to your smartphone through Bluetooth Smart, the Shock Wiz transfers this data to their suspension specific app, providing the rider with a range of data fields to look through. By inserting rider information such as weight and riding style into the app, the Shock Wiz then provides setup recommendations based on the last ride, including air pressure, rebound, high speed compression etc…

After riding with the Shock Wiz, it also provides a suspension health number, giving the rider an understanding of how effective their suspension setup was for that particular course.

Dusty Dynamics director Nigel Wade sees the Shock Wiz as a device applicable to all areas of mountain biking, whether is be a shop setting up a riders suspension when they purchase their bike, a Downhill or Cross Country rider getting their bike dialled for a particular race course, the weekend warrior trying to get a bit more comfort or performance out of their bike or even a marathon racer trying to setup their bike for a range of courses.

Not available to the public yet, the Shock Wiz is currently on Kickstarter looking to gain funding for the first production run of units. Keep an eye out for an in depth review in the coming months as we put the Shock Wiz to the test to setup a range of bikes.
