Red Bull Hardline is coming to Maydena Bike Park

Redbull Hardline is coming to Maydena Bike Park - are you ready?

Mike Blewitt 01.11.2023

Red Bull Hardline is to the Downhill World Cup what Red Bull Rampage is to the wildest freeride jump jam you know. Or in another way, it's wildly more extreme. Recognised as the most progressive downhill mountain bike event in the world, Red Bull has just announced that the Red Bull Hardline is coming to Australia. And where else would Hardline go than Maydena Bike Park?

Maydena Bike Park, Tasmania, has a massively diverse trail network and is known for its steep and rugged terrain. While there are lots of trails on tap, including the national downhill course from 2021 and 2022, you can be sure the Maydena crew will be building something special for this one.

Red Bull Hardline Australia edition official race will take place on Sunday 23-24th February, and will still take place Wales’ Dyfi Valley later in the year, from 1-2 June. Hardline will be the leading light of a 5 day mountain bike festival held at Maydena. Think SRAM Enduro Jam, but turned up to 11 (or 12, to be more appropriate). Given Hardline is invite only, the broader festivities will create opportunties for the broader Australian mountain bike community, beyond spectating.

Spectator tickets for Red Bull Hardline Tasmania are available to purchase on Wednesday 1st November at Redbull.com/hardline.

Dan Atherton says it's ok

Red Bull Hardline founder and MTB Legend Dan Atherton built the formidable track in Wales and has given his tick of approval to Maydena Bike Park.

“10 years ago, we never could've imagined that Red Bull Hardline would reach the stage that it’s at now. It’s been so inspiring to watch the progression of the sport; in those early years, riders pushed themselves out of their comfort zone to adapt from riding a typical World Cup course, but recently the roles are reversed and the onus is on me and the team to build a track gnarly enough to showcase the riders' skills. As part of that progression we’ve decided to take the event global, with the first satellite event to be held in Tasmania. It’s an awesome place with everything we need to build a longer, faster course that will fit perfectly with the Red Bull Hardline ethos.” Dirt Art will be leading the design and construction of the course, with input from Dan and his team.

Red Bull MTB Athlete Tahnee Seagrave is working to bring together a group of talented and eager women with Red Bull’s support to create the best possible opportunities for women’s progression at Red Bull Hardline.

“Red Bull Hardline is THE most difficult mountain bike race in the world and we want to approach the Hardline Women’s Camp in the right way that creates an environment to facilitate and support the progression of the girls at an attainable speed so that more girls can eventually have the opportunity to tackle this course. This approach allows the girls not to be thrown into the deep end but instead truly progress alongside each other to get the best out of the introduction of girls to this level of event.”

Nic Street MP, Minister for Stadia and Events, Tasmanian Government said, “We’re excited to be able to help bring the Red Bull Hardline event to Tasmania for the first time it’s been held outside Wales. We know that Maydena has some of the best and most extreme downhill mountain biking on earth and now the world’s most daring downhill race will prove it.

Red Bull Hardline and sustainability

Red Bull Hardline encourage attendees to bring their own water bottles, they train race marshalls to collect litter left along the course, and collect old kit to donate to local youth cycling projects. Hopefully all speectators get onboard and tread lightly during their time in the special pocket of forest in Maydena.

Our take

The is huge for Australia. We've had Red Bull events before, and hey we even ran a poster from the event in Jindabyne a couple of decades ago! How we watch mountain biking has changed, and with millions being able to see the mountain bike park that has been created at Maydena, it can only be a huge positive for Maydena, Tasmania and Australia. We hope they brew enough Moo Brew.
