We tested the Pure Recovery shake early this year, and impressions were solid. Delivering 20g protein in a palatable cacao/honey flavour, we did appear to reap the benefits of using a dedicated recovery shake. Six months on, and Pure has levelled up in the sports nutrition world, releasing their new range of Performance+ products – including the new Race Recovery product.
Available in a 672g pack (six serves) and individual 112g sachets, the Race Recovery has upped the protein from their Pure Recovery shakes from 20g to 29g, while delivering 52g carbohydrate to replenish muscle glycogen. Pure’s Race Recovery also features electrolytes and anthocyanins from blackcurrant, to help with immune response.
Recommended for use after high level racing or hard training sessions, the main ingredient in Race Recovery is milk protein concentrate, with the remainder of its nine ingredients lacking scary numbers and strange science-y words – a win. Being milk based, this product isn’t for those who don’t tolerate dairy.
What’s notable is that for those purchasing the larger pouch, Pure offers serving suggestions based on weight. If you’re <70kg you’ll get 7.5 serves in the pouch.

Using Pure Performance+ Race Recovery
It’s not too often I get to race between the tape, so I was excited to head out to a local endurance race and test out Pure’s new shake. Crossing the line I was exhausted, the last thing I wanted to do is worry about eating. The race itself was pretty average, pedalling squares from the gun.
I packed a sachet of Race Recovery to use post race which I mixed with a bottle of cool water. It mixes well in a cycling bottle without the need for a fancy protein shaker, making it a perfect option for those races where you’re in the middle of nowhere and recovery nutrition is inaccessible.

Taste wise? Look, I can’t say this was a milkshake. Compared to Pure’s standard Recovery mix with cacao and manuka honey, Race Recovery tasted a little more…agricultural – perhaps it’s the blueberry. It had an earthy taste not unlike some beetroot products I have tried before. It wasn’t unpleasant, just earthy.
How did it go? Well, considering the sinking boats that were my legs on race day, I managed to pull up really well straight after, with the ability to get around my daily tasks the next day without fatigue and I even managed to hit a hard session on the bike the day after – complete with some 2025 PR’s.
I’ll take it!
Our Take
For those who pin a number on and race hard, investing a bit more in good recovery will pay off far more than fancy wheels and a new handlebar upgrade. That being said, Pure Performance+ Race Recovery is at the upper price point for recovery products, so I would be keeping this one up my sleeve for hard races and key blocks of training that are producing a high amount of fatigue.
If you’re a discerning racer who wants to get the most out of yourself and recover well after hard races, check out Pure’s Performance+ range.
