Warmers

Contrary to most of their other kit which is available in retina searing hues, TLD have kept it pretty basic with their new ‘ACE’ arm and knee warmers. Available only in black, which is this season’s new black, these are a light weight set of warmers which are about as inoffensive as you can get. The TLD logo and a small ‘ACE’ logo in reflective material are the only adornments but if you’re relying on your warmers to make some sort of statement you are trying too hard. That the silicone grip print lining spells out Troy Lee Designs is a nice touch though which adds an element of class above and beyond standard strips or dots.

Quality of construction is up there with TLDs usual standard, which is to say pretty high. Flatlock seams and super stretchy polyester fibres ensure that you simply don’t notice these out on the trail which is probably the highest praise you can offer a set of warmers. They just do their job without getting in the way.

Base Layer

The base layer follows a very similar theme to the warmers in that it keeps very much to the understated design brief. The flatlock seams are stitched in contrasting colours (light grey and red) but that’s as loud as it gets. A red logo is conveniently located just below the collar such that it could be seen beneath a jersey with the zip down.

As with the warmers there is no roubaix lining or cold weather reinforcement going on so this base layer is more about moisture management and less about keeping warm. That being said it would be perfect for in-between days where you really just need something to get you going until you’re warmed up. The fit is very snug (should that be Euro?) but that’s just part of the sweat wicking technology at work. The collar is nice and flat too so shouldn’t interfere with your favourite jersey.
