Ride for Country Kid is run by children’s charity Royal Far West, it is an amazing event from Dubbo to Cobar, and fabulous outback adventure while giving back to those in need. Sure, it's no mountain bike odyssey, but every pedal stroke is done to support a good cause.

The Ride’s purpose is to raise funds to support more of the 100,000+ country children with developmental and health needs who cannot access the support they need because of where they live.

Since the Ride’s inception six years ago, more than $2.5m has been raised by sponsors, supporters and 350 dedicated riders who have pedalled more than 3,000km for the cause. This year the charity has set a fundraising target of $600,000. All funds raised from the riders, sponsors and supporters through the Ride go to support country kids.

The 2020 Ride starts in Dubbo on Sunday 24 May, then winds through Narromine and Nyngan with a triumphant finish some 450km later on Tuesday 26 May in Royal Far West’s spiritual home town of Cobar. The route was chosen due to the many close relationships and connections Royal Far West has with the region — children and families, primary schools, community groups, local Branch members as well as our founding history in Cobar.

Royal Far West Clinical Psychology Team Leader Lucy Morrison says, “I’ve been on the last three Rides. They are really special events because you’re able to see first-hand where your fundraising is going. You get to meet the kids in their schools and talk with local families and communities.

“As a psychologist it’s really motivating, and as a keen cyclist it’s a fantastic experience. Each year it’s a challenging route, but very well organised and supported. There’s plenty of pre-event training opportunities to maximise our fitness, and everyone feels very welcome and part of the team. The highlights for me have been the stunning outback scenery and the school visits.”

Times are tough for many country people and their communities. The Ride will give back to those communities by staying in local accommodation, enjoying meals and experiences in the towns and promoting Royal Far West’s experiences to a broad audience.
