NICA Comes to Australia | National Interscholastic Cycling Association
Words: Anna Beck
A longtime mainstay of cycling development in the United States, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) is launching in Australia this November.
Supported by Trek, NICA will support access and participation by hosting try-it-out events, with the first event taking place in Canberra, 30 November. The try-it-out events are targeted towards high school-aged riders, with a focus on supporting new riders as well as offering a new way for experienced riders to explore cycling.
From there, NICA will host a series of seven try-it-out events, with the goal being attending a NICA race weekend on 21-22 February at Mt Stromlo.
“NICA is dedicated to empowering youth through cycling, and we’re thrilled to explore the potential of bringing our programming to Australia,” said Amanda Carey, President of NICA. “By running these initial events, we’re gauging interest from kids, families, and potential sponsors to determine if we can make this program a reality. We’re grateful to have Trek’s support as we test the waters and bring our mission of inclusivity, community, and personal growth to a new audience.”
“Changing the world by getting more people on bikes is core to Trek’s Mission. NICA does just that. And more–it’s why Trek has been a major supporter of NICA in the US for many years. And that’s why we’re proud to host NICA in Australia later this year,” said Mark Eedle, Trek Australia. “NICA’s philosophy that “everyone plays” encapsulates that all young adults, aged 12-17 years, have an opportunity to be part of a community while building their skills, character and health. “We look forward to the NICA events this summer and encourage you all to join.”
