Chat with a Pioneer: Matt Page

Matt Page has made a career out of doing tough multi-day events around the globe - including The Pioneer in early 2016.

Matt Page is a veteran of many mountain bike stage races. From full-service races like the Perskindol Swiss Epic, to more rugged events like the Mongolia Bike Challenge, or Iron Bike. There's a good chance Matt has done it.

Based in Wales, the allure of The Pioneer in early 2016 was very strong. Images of broad blue skies, expansive terrain and a visit to the Southern Hemisphere were enough to tempt Matt south. We spoke to him about what it was exactly that got him to The Pioneer, and how he got ready.

What lead you to The Pioneer in 2016 – was it the route, the racing, or a reason to ride through the Southern Alps?

New Zealand is a country I have never been to before but always wanted to visit. Stage races seem to have become to main reason for me to visit somewhere, so when this was announced I was really excited.

How many paired stage races have you done before? How did The Pioneer compare?

I've not done a huge number of pairs events. I have ridden the Swiss Epic three times and Andalucia Bike Race. There could be a few more, so apologies to any race partners I have missed!

If you were to pick one day at the race in 2016 that was your favourite, what would it be, and why?

Some of the biggest views were had on probably the most straight forward of days from Lake Ohau. Riding wise and memory wise then Stage 1 comes to mind. A huge amount of climbing, hot weather and some technical riding.

Stage One in the Port Hills was loved by all.

Paired stage races create the need for an excellent working relationship. What are your tips for finding the right stage race partner?

You both need to be patient and accepting with one another as anything can happen and you need to stay cool and either sort it out and keep going or just get over it.

I've always raced with someone I know, but never someone I know really well. That way you are probably less likely to fall out!

Make sure you and your team mate's expectations are the same.

Given your experience, what do you take into account when packing for a stage race?

Is it somewhere with good mechanical assistance/shops? New Zealand vs Mongolia sort of thing. On The Pioneer, or similar then usually just the basics and things that you use that are a bit unique to your bike, like brake pads, tyres, spare rotor, maybe a chainring.

For a race like Mongolia Bike Challenge with no support then spares are more important. Spokes, tools, bars, seatpost, saddle. Anything that might break and stop you racing.

Kit wise, some even have laundry services at events these days, but you can almost always find somewhere to wash kit. 3 sets is about right for most people.

Do you want to head to The Pioneer in 2017? Welll we have an entry to the 4 Day Traverse to give away – but you have to be in it to win it!
