Our Cape York Adventure by bike
The Big Adventure
Words and Photography by Allegra Mcgrory
We all have big dreams of embarking on epic rides overseas, but often, we overlook the incredible adventures waiting for us right here in Australia. My husband and I had previously taken the iconic 4WD holiday to the tip, but ever since I got into cycling, this journey has been a bucket-list trip.
Our journey with Cape York Adventures began on a private charter plane from Cairns, where the aerial view revealed the breathtaking biodiversity of the landscape below. Upon landing in Coen, we stepped into a world of sunburnt country, dirt-corrugated roads, and endless adventure.
Initially, I knew only four of the twenty riders, but as we tackled our first 40 kilometres together, bonds formed quickly. Over the next seven days, we covered 500 kilometres and ascended 3,500 meters, crossing about seven rivers daily. The scenery was ever-changing, from rugged dirt roads and bumpy corrugations to stretches of beach scrub and narrow single tracks carved by 4WDs and motorbikes.
We quickly realised that we would be soaking it all in with wet clothes and shoes from here on out. My favourite part of the whole trip is drinking water straight out of the rivers, our crew knew where to go.
Throughout the ride, we encountered an entourage of Camp Quality 4WDs making their way to the tip. It was entertaining to watch them tackle the technical sections. Though I was initially nervous about sharing the road with cars and motorbikes, we were well looked after. Most drivers would stop to let us pass, making it feel like we were the only ones out there.
This solitude allowed us to truly soak in the beauty surrounding us. We also experienced the bike version of the famous Gunshot Café, which was another exhilarating highlight! The singletrack felt natural, allowing us to adjust the difficulty as we liked. We explored the Telegraph Track, Heathlands Forest track, and Frenchman’s Track, each offering its unique challenges.
We made stops to experience local gems like Eliot and Fruit Bat Falls, where we plunged into refreshing waters. The realisation of how beautiful our island is struck me as we navigated the rolling terrain through tropical rainforests, windswept beaches, and tea tree scrubs on our route to the tip of Australia. Standing at the northernmost point, we relished the achievement of being among a select few who have ridden all the way to tip, Pajinka.
The night on Thursday Island was one to remember, as we looked across the ocean with the setting sun.

Cape York Adventures catered to every detail, ensuring our experience was unforgettable. Evenings were filled with entertainment, with a camp fire and the strumming of a guitar under the vast starlit sky. It was a magical way to unwind after a day of riding, connecting with fellow adventurers while gazing at the stars.
Tips for cycling in Cape York
I joined this tour a bit late, deciding only five months prior, but I learned a few things that could help anyone considering a similar journey:
1. Start Small: No matter where you are with your riding skills, just begin. Go on micro-adventures in your area and build your endurance with rides that last as long as you can manage. I recommend choosing hillier routes to build strength for the endless sand you’ll encounter.
2. Camping Gear: I opted to hire tents and camping gear, which were in great condition and easy to use.
3. Riding Gear: I wished I had packed fewer everyday clothes and brought three pairs of knicks instead. Having a dry pair can boost morale. Be prepared to get wet! I loved my Bowy knicks; they were quick-drying and comfortable.
4. Sudo Cream: This is a must-have! A good butt cream can save you from discomfort, and the zinc oxide is beneficial for healing.
5. Trust the Tour Guides: I loved having the crew in our corner and trusted them every step of the way. It made the experience enjoyable and allowed me to take it all in easily.
Embrace the adventure, and you’ll find that the beauty of Australia is just as captivating as any overseas destination!
